Can I Test My Own Equipment?

Yes, and this should not be viewed as a second rate option – it can actually breed electrical safety in the workplace and in many instances can save you money.

You do not need any electrical qualifications to test and tag portable electrical equipment as under the New Zealand Electrical Regulations test and tag is not a ‘prescribed’ activity. However, to be able to test your own or your company’s appliances you will need:

‘Competency’ training & assessment – not just ‘product training’ from someone who sells testers
An accountable and auditable records
Testing equipment for the ‘Competent Person’ to use – PAT Testers have been especially designed for the ‘Competent Person’
A testing system which will stand up to auditing for OSH/WorkCover purposes
Ongoing support and back up

Each workplace is unique and as such training packages and testing equipment supplied by Metrotest will be geared to best suit your workplace.

Following the success of courses we have run at individual companies and for nationwide groups, we now offer courses which individuals can enrol on (Open Courses) and these are available all around New Zealand and Australia. During these courses you will receive:

Extensive testing knowledge from comprehensively trained tutors with many years of experience in the classroom and in the field – they don’t just know the theory, they know the work environment
Comprehensive tuition on Visual and Mechanical inspection techniques
Practical hands on time with equipment and testers with friendly trainers

No previous knowledge of electricity is required to participate in a training course, but we do conduct an individual assessment at the end of the course on each person being trained for ‘Competency’ – it’s not just a ‘turn up and get a certificate’ course.
